Overview of Prakash S. lohar

At the beginning of the preface, the author describes how he developed an interest in cell and molecular biology. His primary goal in writing this textbook is to help generate an appreciation in graduate and postgraduate students of biotechnology, Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Health and Medical Sciences for the activities.

In this comprehensive book, he made an attempt for a concise coverage of every topic from its fundamental aspects to the latest developments in an easily accessible style. According to preface, all cell organelles, their structure and functions have been discussed with incredible illustrations.

Overall, there are 12 chapters in the book, of which the first 2 chapters deal with the cell world and cellular components. The third chapter emphasizes the importance of microscopy and micrometry. After that, the 4th chapter covers the structural and genomic organization of different viral classes. Then, 5th chapter bacterial genetics and the role of bacteria, plasmids and cosmic in genetic engineering.

In addition, cellular cycle, cell division, and cell death are discussed in chapter 6, followed by eukaryotic chromosomes with the consequences of structural and numerical variations in chapter 7. Moreover, he discuss the chemical nature, structure, and replication of DNA in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells in chapter 8. After that, chapter 9 deal with DNA mutability and its repair mechanism. The next two chapters provide information on transcription, RNA synthesis, RNA processing, genetic code, and the mechanism of translation.

Finally, chapter 12 focuses on our present understanding of the topic. In addition to the breadth of coverage, the book includes a glossary for defining the key terms and an up-to-date list of Nobel laureates in the field of physiology/medicine and chemistry.

Review of Cell and Molecular Biology by Prakash S. Lohar

Pages

The book contains 372 pages in total. Since the book is printed on matte-finish paper, the reading experience is pleasing. Albeit, the colour of the pages is quite yellow. Furthermore, I think that pages are on the slightly thinner side. In addition to the right finish of the paper, the font size of the text is selected wisely which is easily to read. Overall, I am completely satisfied with the page quality of the book.

Images

The book has well accepted black and white image printing format. Cell and Molecular biology by Prakash S. Lohar ( the book) contains an adequate amount of images, diagrams, tables, and illustrations. But, the images have very poor quality. Firstly, it seems quite blurry. Secondly, they give a hint of like someone enlarge smaller images to look bigger. Although, they fulfil their purpose but I am disappointed at this part. At last, I would say that images can be a bit better.

Here are few images from the book…

Book

The book has 12 chapter and 372 pages altogether. As I have said that the first chapter talks about the prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell and the last chapter is about the regulation of bacterial gene expression. The book contains all the basic information you may need to understand the topic. I thoroughly read almost 7 chapters from the book and I am completely satisfied with its content.

The author used very simple language. Besides the language, sentence framing is very lucid and crystal clear. In this book, the author describes every topic very efficiently. For example, if you are reading a certain topic from the book and has little or no prior knowledge about it, you will understand it very easily and quickly. At last, students who are pursuing B.Sc., M.Sc or any other bachelorette degree can opt this book.

Unlike Cell Biology by David E. Sadava (another cell biology book I reviewed earlier…. read review), it is to the point and short.

Price

The book is very cheap and it cost only ₹240 (MRP is printed at the back). It is available at amazon and flipkart also.

My final thought on this book

Indeed it is a good book, not very detailed but informative. Lazy readers (who study the night before their examination) can go for it. Trust me, it won’t disappoint you. It slightly disappointed me at image quality because images are pixelated and blurry. All in all, it is the only negative point I noticed. Otherwise, it is a nice book. Students, go….go….go for it.

Lastly, score time…

  • Readability: 5/5
  • information: 4.0/5
  • diagrams: 3.5/5
  • comprehension: 4.5/5

Total score: 4.25/5
